Biography: Prof. Harvinder Singh is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with University Hospitals of Leicester NHS trust. After completing his primary medical qualification and Master’s degree in Orthopaedics from India, he undertook higher surgical training in Orthopaedics from Leicester (East midlands south rotation). He completed an Upper Limb Fellowship in Wrightington and Royal Northshore Hospital, Sydney, Australia and returned to Leicester as Upper Limb Orthopaedic Consultant. His interests include shoulder (osteoarthritis, impingement syndrome, rotator cuff pathology and unstable shoulder), elbow (arthritis and instability) and hand and wrist disorders.
Prof. Singh is Honorary Associate Professor with University of Leicester and has a PhD in Health Sciences from University of Leicester. He has completed a number of travelling fellowships Including the prestigious ABC (American British and Canadian) fellowship from BOA in 2022 and also other fellowships with Royal College of Surgeons of England, British Orthopaedic Association, British Hand Society, European Hand Society and a prestigious British Elbow and Shoulder society fellowship and Esska Alwin Jager Senior Fellowship.
Research:
Harvinder’s main interest is national collaborative research including clinical and cost effectiveness research is upper limb trauma and orthopaedic surgery. His areas of clinical and research interest also include rotator cuff tears, elbow conditions, upper limb metastasis surgery, scaphoid and clavicle fractures. He has authored over 90 peer reviewed publications.
Projects:
- DIDACT Trial: Chief Investigator for DIDACT trial: Surgery compared with sling immobilisation in the management of adults with a displaced fracture of the distal clavicle (DIDACT): a multi-centre, pragmatic, parallel group, non-inferiority, randomised controlled trial.
- HUSH Trial: Co-applicant for the HUmeral SHaft fracture trial: A multi-centre prospective randomised superiority trial of surgical versus non-surgical interventions for humeral shaft fractures in patients aged 18 years or older.
- RAPSODI Trial: Reverse or Anatomical replacement for Painful Shoulder Osteoarthritis – Differences between Interventions: a multi-centre, pragmatic, parallel group, superiority randomised controlled trial.
- CUFFPATCH Trial: Project Grant on Pilot project Rotator cuff repair with or without augmentation with GraftJacket. Grant of £15,000 by Stryker UK (Wright Medical).
- Principal Investigator for PROFHER 2 trial: The trial will be comparing reverse shoulder arthroplasty, hemiarthroplasty, and non-surgical care for 3 and 4-part proximal humerus fractures in older people. Led by University of York. CI: Prof Amar Rangan.
- Principal Investigator for START REACTS trial for University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust: Project led by University of Coventry: CI: Andy Metcalf.
- Principal Investigator for SOFFT Trial for Leicester: Project lead by University of Wrightington: CI Prof Adam Watts.
- British Shoulder Elbow Society Pump Priming Grant 2019; £15000: For James Lind Alliance PSP for Elbow conditions.
- Grants from British Orthopaedic Association, Leicester Shoulder Elbow Unit Charity (Total: £20,000) for the James Lind Alliance Priority setting Partnership for Elbow Conditions.
Supervision
Harvinder is currently supervising two PhD student and has previously supervised a number of students for Master’s degree and BSc students. He would be willing to supervise further PhDs in the field of musculoskeletal surgical research.
